Students with medical needs

Support for students with ongoing health or medical needs.

The Alternative Tuition Service

Some children may be temporarily unable to attend school due to their medical or health needs. In some instances, these children may be supported by the Alternative Tuition Service (ATS). The Service supports:

  • those medically unable to attend school for a period of time. ATS will work with the school, family and medical professionals to enable reintegration back to school at the earliest opportunity;
  • those who have been permanently excluded and require support until an education setting has been found.

The service is accessed by school referral. Pupils remain on roll at their school for the duration of the tuition period, with reintegration to school always the goal.

Specialist Learning Support Service

The Specialist Learning Support Service is a jointly funded service between health and education that supports children and young people with complex health needs to receive education. They support children and young people with complex medical conditions who are reliant upon technology (for example non-invasive ventilation, tracheostomy, oxygen therapy) to enable their inclusion in mainstream and special schools.

Access to the service is via Health professionals or Education professionals where the child has already had a Continuing Care assessment.

The Sensory & Physical (S&P) Service

  • Service for Deaf Children & Young People, the
  • Service for Children with Visual and/or Multisensory Impairments, and the
  • Specialist Learning Support Assistant (SpLSA) Service

Children and young people with additional medical and/or sensory needs may struggle to access or engage with learning. This service work with education settings to help them better understand the needs of pupils with these additional needs and how they can be best supported, and work directly with pupils to provide them with specialist teaching and support.
